    Milestones in environmental protection

1995 proposals by the ASTA to the head of university for an ecologically efficient University of Bremen
In 1995 the general studying committee (AStA) of the University of Bremen developed a comprehensive catalogue of demands for the improvement of the environmental needs of the University of Bremen.

1996 establishment of the environmental committee
For a sustainable enhancement of the environmental protection at the University Bremen and to effectively improve the demands of the students the environmental committee of the University of Bremen was built in 1996. The representatives are students, lecturers and members of staff from different specialist areas and departments of the University of Bremen.

1996–1999 participation in agenda 21 – the process of Bremen (round table)
Between 1996 and 1999, the university participated in the discussions with regards to the agenda process in Bremen, in order to be able to network with other institutions in Bremen.

1997 producibility study UMS Professor Haasis and Professor Wittkowski
On behalf of the chancellor, Professor Haasis and Professor Wittkowski founded a feasibility study, in which one analyzed, how an environmental management system can be established at the University Bremen.

1997 first ecological report
In 1997, the first ecological report of the University of Bremen was published along with an overview of the ecological development of the university.
With the publication, the university documented its success in environmental friendly action of the entire university.

1998 opening of the premier waste and special waste disposal unit
The waste and special waste disposal unit which was established in 1998 is certified as waste disposal unit since March 2002.

2000 development of a research proposal
“Environmental management at community facilities: Analysis of the motivation and cooperative problems, development of recommendations for action and exemplary conversion in a network”
In order to further improve the environmental policy at the University of Bremen, the introduction of a certified environmental management system was introduced by EMAS.

In 2000 the research proposal “environmental management at community facilities: Analysis of the motivation and cooperative problems, development of recommendations for action and exemplary conversion in a network” was estalished.

2000 second ecological report
In 2000 the second ecological report of the University of Bremen was published.

2001 beginning of the project: “Environmental management at community
Facilities” Supported by the external consultation of Dr.Harald Gilch (HIS university information system GmbH) the University of Bremen started the project “Environmental management at community facilities”.

January 2004 validation – Dr. Wruk
After the successful execution of the project „environmental management at community facilities“, the environmental management system of the University of Bremen was evaluated for the first time.

February 2005 1st audit
In February 2005 the university accomplished the 1st audit. With this, environmental auditors of the University of Bremen regularly examine the effectiveness of the environmental management system.

May 2005 1st environmental day at the University of Bremen
In May 2005 the University of Bremen organized its first environmental day. In the framework of the environmental day: workshops, exhibition and a panel discussion for the students, lecturers and members of staff were organized. The panel discussions, in which the green leading politician Hans-Christian Ströbele participated, took place under the slogan “globalization ecologically”.

2005 conclusion of the redevelopment of the SuUB
In 2005 the comprehensive redevelopment of the state and university library was successfully concluded. The objective of the redevelopment concept was to reorganize the SuUB on the basis of ecological criterion.

2005 November Publication: sustainable report of the University of Bremen
In November 2005 the University of Bremen was the first university in Germany which published a comprehensive sustainable report. The complete can be viewed report under the following link: www.ums.uni-bremen.de/downloads.htm

January 2006 “education for sustainable development”
This project was named officially as a decade project by the UNESCO.

February 2006 2nd monitoring audit
In February 2006 environmental audits accomplished the 2nd monitoring audit at the University of Bremen.

May 2006 environmental days at the university
The “university environmental days of 2006” were within the framework of „10 years EMAS. For this purpose a trade conference of the University of Bremen and the environmental panel of experts of the Federal Ministry of the Environment took place on the 31 May 2006. On the 30 of May 2006 the environmental panel of experts officially met at the University of Bremen.

August 2006 price “to work on cycle”
With its project „to work on cycle“ the University of Bremen achieved a leading position in the ADFC/AOK competition „Fahrradaktiver Betrieb“ in August 2006. A goal of the project was to motivate the students, lecturers and members of staff to disclaim the car and ride to work by bike.

May 2007 university environmental day
On 12 July 2007 the University of Bremen celebrated the third environmental day. The emphasis was on climate change. Jens Eckhoff (German offshore foundation), Dr. Reinhard Loske (senator for education and environment) and Dieter Marx (German atomic forum) discussed the topic „climate changes: Energy policy in 21. Century “discussed under the moderation of Professor Dr. Müller Christian.
